Elliot's notes:
I composed Welcome to Deutschland with a simple concept in mind: Late night.  I wanted the opening of the album to be reminiscent of one of the most popular and prolific big bands of all time, Doc Severinson's Tonight Show Band.  The idea was to audibly announce the record, to draw your ears into the music, and most-importantly to set the tone for the entire album.  All artsiness aside, this is an album of raucous, joyous big band music.  I want the whole album to be a celebration of music.  I could think of no better way to do this.

One other thing to note: I am very fortunate to have the most talented musicians anywhere in the band for this session.  As I was finalizing the chart for the session I realized that I was underutilizing a great resource - Javier Gonzalez' in-human range.  I solved this problem by writing a double-C for him at the end of this song!
